Sustainability Activities

The sustainability team in compliance with the RA Standard  has developed an activity plan to help all actors in the supply chain of Adikanfo under the sustainability program.

Farmers Organization

Farmers are organized through the purchasing clerks. Basic information is taking such as name of the farmer, society, district, gender, Ghana card number, number of plots, previous harvest etc. This information helps the team to develop the group member register and also helps in planning activities for farmers.

Farmers registered are given contract to sign and achieved in the IMS office


Trainings

Farmers on the sustainability project are trained on good agriculture, social and environmental practices with the aim to increase yield, protecting the environment and improving the livelihood of the farmer.

Good agriculture practices

•      Farmers are trained to source seedlings from SPD

•      Farmers are trained to implement integrated pest Management strategies (IPM )

•      Harvest and postharvest practices

Good social practices

•      Adikanfo has in place Access and Address committee to help address issues on Child labour, Forced labour, Discrimination, Workplace violence and Harassment

•      The team train its members on occupational health and safety

•      Village savings and loans has been established to help farmer acquire quick loans

•      Adikanfo has a gender person who works with assess and address committee to help with issues related to gender.

Good environmental practices

•      Adikanfo Commodities has trained its farmers to implement practices which will reduce the negative impact on the environment

•      Examples:

•      Farmers are not to encroach on protected areas

•      Farmers are to manage waste in order not to pose risk in the environment

•      Farmers are to create buffer zone to protect water bodies

Traceability

The traceability of cocoa beans along the supply chain has become a basic requirement by client. Adikanfo Commodities Ltd. has developed a strong traceability system where cocoa can be traced from society level, district level to port. Our aim is to ensure a transparent, accurate and reliable tracking of the cocoa beans sourced.

Our traceability system starts from the farmer. All beans from the farmer are recorded in a passbook which is kept by the farmer. At the purchasing clerk level all cocoa received are recorded in the pc personal. Cocoa evacuated from society to depot is accompanied with a waybill with station mark on every sack. Cocoa evacuated to port is also accompanied with a secondary evacuation waybill and quality control certificate.

Mapping and internal inspectors

Mapping activities are undertaken to ensure the capture of GPS coordinates and farm size data.

Internal inspection is done yearly to assess group members compliance with internal and external standard. Adikanfo Commodities Ltd during inspection employs and train additional staff to carry out on farm and off farm inspection to determine the readiness of the group before any external audit

Women empowerment and diversification

Adikanfo in partnership Rikolto is implementing village savings and loans (VLSA) in our communities. This project will help improve the savings culture of the famers, the poor and marginalize, increase income and also improved the livelihood of farmers. As a results community facilitators have being trained to assist in the organization. Metallic cash boxes, saving passbook has been supplied to the groups. Group contributions are ongoing and substantial amount has been accrued

Child protection

Adikanfo Commodities considers the protection of children in our communities as a vital pilar in our sustainability work. Field officers are trained to create awareness on child labour, force labour, discrimination and harassment. we believe children are the vulnerable ones who are likely to be culprits. Farmers are to ensure children who are in the school going age attend school

The sustainability team has commenced   surveys to identify potential cases of child labour being light work, heavy work or hazardous activities during school hours. The surveys when completed will help the team to come up with appropriate remediation measures.
